The Top 3 Best and Worst Signings Of The Season

A good signing can have monumental effect on a team season, from a new centre back who helps sure up a defence leaking goals to a new striker who's goals can help fire a team up the league. This post will be looking at who I think were the 3 best signings of the season and the 3 worst.

Number 3 - Peter Odemwingie - West Bromich Albion

In my opinion, the sole reason why Albion managed to avoid the drop this year was this man's goals. His 15 league goals in 32 league games propelled WBA up the league from almost certain relegation candidates to nearly breaking in to the top 10 by the end of the season. Scoring 26% of his team goals for the season has led to this man being named in the top 3 for me.

Number 2 - David Silva - Manchester City

Definitely a major factor behind City reaching the coveted automatic champions league spot ahead of Arsenal and Tottenham. A small spanish creative midfielder who's flair and spark has created the majority of City's chances in front of goal, he makes the team tick and is the link between the midfield and attack. He thrived in the free role that the manager assigned to him he ended the season with an impressive 15 assist and 4 goals in his 30 league matches. He also made valuable contributions in their FA cup winning run and in the Europa league. Definitely one of the stars of the season for city and fully deserves this number 2 spot.

Number 1 - Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez - Manchester United

At the end of last season, nobody had even heard of him and were wondering when Sir Alex signed him whether he had finally lost the plot. But come this season, and everyone knows him and he is widely regarded as Manchester United's best signing ever and even the Premier League's best signing. For a measly fee of £7 Million, Chicharito has chipped in with nearly 20 goals this season in just over 40 appearances which is a great return for a striker who is young and new to the Premier League. He has won games single handedly for Manchester United including the game against Stoke City where he scored the first goal with an improvised back header and the decisive winner to seal the points. He's also scored 14 goals in 23 appearances for Mexico which is a great achievement for a 22 year old. The partnership of Rooney and Hernandez has already been lethal this season and I think it will continue to be for many seasons to come. He's kept the Premier League top scorer out of the side which says something as well about his talent. Many teams would now pay well over £25 Million for the Mexican striker and it's only due to the fact that Sir Alex has been a genius with his signings that this young man has flourished in the Premier League. With this player Manchester United have a great chance of Premier League and possibly Champions League glory. He is by far the best signing of the 2010/11 season in my personal view.

Other players that I considered for my top 3 signings that played monumental parts in their respective team's successes - Rafael Van Der Vaart
                                                                        David Luiz
                                                                        Asamoah Gyan
                                                                        Luis Suarez
                                                                        DJ Campbell

On the contrary, a bad signing can hamper a team's season, a striker that cant score to save his life, a midfielder that just cant seem to pass the ball in a straight line or a goalkeeper that seems to have forgotten how to catch a ball. A poor signing can also cost the club who purchased him a lot of money as the player is repaying any of the money in good performances. In my eyes, these were the 3 worst signings of last season:

Number 3 -  Joe Cole - Liverpool

A player I actually quite admire but has had a woeful time in Merseyside since joining from Chelsea, not getting any regular first team football his chances have been limited to Europa league games and the odd chance coming on as a substitute. I, along with many other people, were expecting a lot more than what we got from Mr Cole last season and hopefully he can turn it around in the 2011/12 season.

Number 2 - Bebe - Manchester United

Just useless. What a waste of 7 million pounds. The old term 'my nan could do better than that' really does apply here with this player. Didn't get many first team opportunities and I can see why. When you are competing with strikers such as Chicharito and Berbatov for a starting spot you need to perform when you get your chance, this young man... did not perform.

Number 1 - Fernando Torres - Chelsea

Where to start? £50million pounds spent to try and find a striker who could fire them to premier league glory. He went 903 minutes in a chelsea shirt without scoring... his one and only goal of the season for his new team. Was that one goal really worth £50million? I really don't think so. Keeping good proven goal scorers such as Anelka and Drogba on the bench so he could wander around the pitch hopelessly like a lost puppy. I mean come on, when the transfer finally went through and Torres was unveiled with his Chelsea shirt all the fans were creaming at the thought of having the 'worlds best striker' in their team.... 11 games later they instead found that they obtained a useless misfiring striker who couldn't finish his dinner even if he had fat Frank Lampard helping him. I'm sure he will improve his performances for next season... They can't get much worse!

Other players that were considered for the 3 worst signings: Christian Poulsen
                                                                                                       Milan Jovanovic
                                                                                                       James Beattie
                                                                                                       Stephen Ireland
                                                                                                       Sol Campbell
                                                                                                       Eidur Gudjohnsen

Hope you agree.
