Brad Friedel signs for Spurs

Brad Friedel has agreed to join Tottenham Hotspur from Aston Villa after rejecting approaches from Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion. The 40-year-old has signed a two-year deal to move to White Hart Lane and will be given the role of number one with  error-prone Heurelho Gomes on the transfer list. Friedel has played for Liverpool and Blackburn before joining Villa and famously scored for Rovers against Charlton Athletic in 2004. He currently holds the record for the number of consecutive Premier League appearances with 275.
The former American international snubbed offers from his old club Liverpool because he did not want to Pepe Reina’s understudy and turned down a bid from Roy Hodgson’s Baggies. Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is pleased with his acquisition and hopes Friedel will bring stability and experience to his defence.
“Brad is a top goalkeeper of real quality who has great experience,” he told the club’s website. ”It is good to have three such experienced top goalkeepers at the club in Gomes, Carlo and now Brad. It means we have competition for places particularly with the number of games we will hopefully face next year both domestically and in Europe as well.”
Personally I think this a smart purchase for Tottenham as a less error-prone goalkeeper could see them get into the top 4 next season.
